Digital Security 101 - Backups and cloud storage
So it's Sunday afternoon and I'm writing this article while backing up my files. Following the 3-2-1 Backup Rule↗ the copies are stored offline in hard discs and online on a cloud storage.
While there are plenty of online storages most known are Google Drive↗, OneDrive↗ and Apple's iCloud↗ I'd rather a private, end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) and open source solution.
Filen↗ ticks all the boxes. You get 10GB storage for free by creating an account but additionally you can get 10GB more if you sign up by using a referral link. Check out Filen's subreddit↗ in order to get one since users will be glad to share them since they also get 10GB per user (limited up to three referrals or 30GB).
Filen is FOSS, cross-platform -native apps are available for Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS and Android- and its software is audited periodically. You can also use the webapp from any browser if you like me don't want to install software on your PC.
Furthermore Filen offers a lifetime plan with 100GB of storage for 30€ which are stackable.
Needless say that I have been using its service for almost 4 years without any issue. I haven't lost any file nor got any corrupted archive.
