How to HEY
HEY is out. Everybody wants an invite. When you're in, give it an honest go. Here are what I've learnt so far, one week in.
- Really try. Set up forwards from your old account(s). You won't get the real experience unless you try with your actual email load.
- Use all the keyboard shortcuts. This goes for all software. No need to learn them all at once but every time you've done something two or three times with clicking, make an effort to learn the shortcut instead. (Press
?for a cheat sheet) - Forget Inbox Zero. Email is a river. You step into it when you need to, but don't assume that the rock you put down will be there when you get back. So,
- Act on first open. When something lands in your Imbox force yourself to decide its fate on first open. Mark it Reply later or Set aside if you expect to see it again. Otherwise it goes into the river and who knows where it ends up. It's fine.
- Send most newsletter(ish) mails to The Feed. The Feed doesn't have an unread count. You get to it when you get to it. If a newsletter is too important or time sensitive it doesn't belong in The Feed.
- Let receipts land in Imbox then Set Aside then archive in The Paper Trail. They probably need to be added to your tax or reimbursement system. Don't auto-archive them in Paper Trail. See them in Imbox, then put them in Set Aside until you're ready to do the work of putting them where they need to go, then send them to Paper Trail, just because.
