Mikkel writes notes

Notes apps

Notes apps are the perfect subjects for endless fidgeting. I have a problem with notes apps.

No app is perfect, and since the key functionality is so seemingly small in scope, they always feel like they are almost there. So close!

I'm as guilty as anyone for blaming my lack of output on software. Right now I'm cmd+tabbing between iA Writer, nvAlt, vim and Notion, frustratedly unable to make a decision on where to put notes.

I don't even write that many notes. I barely ever read them.

Notes is a deceivingly simple term for something actually complex.

Some are for safe keeping. Important information. Structured, curated, nurtured.

Some are just for quickly jotting down an idea so you won't forget it. My past in stand-up comedy has taught me that however much you think you'll remember this one, you won't. And even then you can still troll yourself by not capturing enough, leaving you with half a sentence and the feeling that you just lost the greatest idea of all time to your lazy thumbs.

I have this habit where, every time I start thinking something is wrong with software, I step one step back from the feeling and ponder what it really is instead that's wrong with me.

Notes apps are great. 80% good is more than good enough.

My problem with notes apps is, really, that I'm frustrated that I don't write more often.
